Sorry guys, but don’t expect testosterone supplements to take you back to those heady days of Middle Age.
A study in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association found that aging men who took testosterone supplements for six months were no more mentally or physical spry than their un-supplemented counterparts. The research involved 207 men between the ages of 60 and 80. All had lower than normal levels of the male hormone testosterone.
Men who were randomly assigned to receive an additional 160 milligrams of testosterone daily did add muscle and lose fat. But the changes didn’t translate into increased strength or improved mobility. Their bones weren’t stronger and their thinking wasn’t clearer. Their risk of developing diabetes remained unchanged.
“This study is, as far as we know, the largest study of testosterone supplementation with the most” participants, wrote the study authors. The work was done at the University Medical Center Utrecht in the Netherlands. The researchers concluded that the findings don’t support the health benefits of modest testosterone supplementation.
