    Judy,

What about those of us over 55 with bad knees?

Also, I’ve done those tricep exercises for years and still jiggle. What else can be done?

    Thanks,

Thank you for writing in! For those with bad knees, or backs or shoulders, etc. there are so many exercises you can do. For one, getting into a water aerobics programs is awesome. There are some great one’s in the city like at the YMCA, where you can just join the class. Also, walking is an excellent way to get cardio. It is not bad on your knees and everyone can do that for 20-30 minutes a day. Also, there are some great stretching and yoga type classes for everyone. The Germantown United Methodist Church and other churches in the area have many classes, where they are just $4.00 per class. Can’t beat that!

For your triceps, the key is getting in enough cardio exercise. The excess jiggle is either skin or fat. If it’s fat, you cannot spot reduce, you must get in your 20-30 minutes of exercises each day. If it’s skin, just let it jiggle!!! And of course, keep up your tricep exercises!

I am a 48 year old male thhat runs 3 5k’s each week and exercise utilizing weight and resistance taining 5 days a week. I have a nice muscle deveopedment, but the excess fat around my mid section is not decreasing as fast as i would like. What kind of life syle and nutritutional modifications would you suggest. I am also married and my spouse have lost 12 pounds over twelve weeks using Weight Watchers.

If you are exercising as much as you say, then it is definitely diet related. I would suggest that you write down exactly everything you put in your mouth for about 4 days. Then evaluate that. Every little snack or a bite of this and a bite of that counts. If an excess of 500 calories per day is evident times 7 days a week, that equals an additional 3500 calories, which equals a pound of fat. Be very diligent with calories and what you are eating. If drinking sodas or any sugary drink, get rid of that too. Make a doctor appt. also to check your sugar level and make sure it is not too high.

    Johnnie,

It sounds like you are doing a good job on both your exercise and your eating plan. You say that the excess fat around your midsection is not decreasing as fast as you would like. Remember though, you are making progress. Twelve pounds in twelve weeks is a slow, steady decrease in weight and is more likely weight loss from fat due to the cardio and weight training. For extra motivation kept track of your waist measurement and know that with continued weight loss and patience, your waist size will continue to decrease. Good job so far!!

Does anyone know what’s happened to the Memphis Bicycle Shop on Summer? I need parts for my old Schwinn Airdyne and these guys have always been my source. I can’t tell if they are closed uo for good or what. Does anyone know anything about it?

Should I eliminate diet sodas from my diet?

  8. Ashley Hofeditz, RD, LDN Says:

    Hi Johnnie,

Eliminating diet sodas from you diet is a difficult question. To answer this question we would need to look at several things. First, how many do you drink a day? Do these diet sodas take the place of nutrient filled beverages such as milk? Do you feel that the caffeine from the diet sodas (if they contain caffeine) keep you up at night? Do you think you need to get rid of them? Has your doctor asked you to stop drinking them? If you only drink a few a day and you can answer no to the other questions then I would say that a few a day would be fine because all beverages including tea, coffee, and soda (even with caffeine) count towards your daily fluid intake. One of the easiest weays to tell if you are takin in enough fluid each day is to check the color of your urine. If it is very pale yellow to almost clear, you are probably drinking enough. If it is dark yellow you need to drink more. Remember though, certain vitamins and medications can change the color of your urine. I hope this answers your question. Take care! -Ashley
