Elvis on the scene

“I started out as a rock and roll jock playing Elvis on the radio.”
-Dave Brown, WMC-TV weatherman, on his 1962 debut at a 1,000 watt station in Milan, Tenn.

Quiet! Quiet on the set.

Photo by Mike MapleDave Brown, Most Consistent Weathercaster in The Commercial Appeal’s Memphis Most contest, is taping in WMC-TV’s studio on Union. His microphone is live. That means stop flapping your gums. Hold still while Dave does all the talking.

But the affable Channel 5 weatherman is picking up strange sounds on his mic.

Footsteps. Snapping fingers. A melody.

And here comes Elvis Presley strutting through the studio door singing:

When I walk through that door

Baby be polite

You’re gonna make me sore

If you don’t greet me right

Don’t you ever kiss me once, kiss me twice.

Brown doesn’t miss a beat. “No,” he replies.
