Winner: Three 6 Mafia
More than just “Most,” Three 6 Mafia has actually come to personify Memphis rap in their 15-year career. Masterminded by producers DJ Paul and Juicy J, the group’s fast, chant-heavy style of Southern rap, called crunk, has become synonymous with the city’s rap scene, culminating in the group receiving an Oscar in 2006 for “Its Hard Out Here For A Pimp” from the “Hustle & Flow” soundtrack. Since that high-profile win, the group has gone mainstream, with a reality show on MTV and a new album due this summer.
