Winner: Elvis Presley
Was there ever any doubt about who would win this category? After all, Elvis Presley helped invent rock and roll in Memphis in 1955. And from his opulent lifestyle to the way his image has been marketed, he set the mold for all music stars to follow.
This summer, Memphis marks the 30th anniversary of Presley’s death, and he has never seemed more alive. His music still lives through soundtracks, remixes, and an in-the-works Cirque du Soleil show. Even Elvis’ movies are getting the deluxe reissue treatment.
At Graceland they are preparing for a throng of pilgrims this week, expected to exceed the 75,000 who showed up for the 25th anniversary of his death.
Finalists: B.B. King, Isaac Hayes
