Most Unappreciated Attraction
Winner: Memphis Zoo
Take a stroll through China, down the Northwest Passage or over to Cat Country and you will see why the Memphis Zoo was voted the Most Family-Fun Event in Memphis.
From the Avenue of Animals at the zoo entrance (no climbing please), to the relatively recent arrivals, the beloved pandas Ya Ya and Le Le and the frolicking polar bears Payton, Cranbeary and Haley, the zoo is an oasis of fun for all ages nestled in the shady confines of Overton Park in Midtown.
Besides the exhibits, the zoo offers further educational opportunities such as summer camps and overnight adventures for kids as well as adult programs and events.
Readers also voted the zoo as the Most Underappreciated Attraction in Memphis. Regular zoo-goers must think that people are missing out on or are unaware of all the zoo has to offer.
2000 Prentiss Place in Overton Park; 276-WILD or 276-9453; memphiszoo.org. The zoo is closed on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Hours: March through October 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.; November through February 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
