On the scene with Elvis

“I enjoyed your postage stamp.”
Richard Butler of Little Rock, seeing Elvis at Paulette’s Restaurant in Midtown

Photo by Mike MapleWhen Dianne Mattinson of Little Rock was a little girl, she had a crush on Elvis Presley. She was such a big fan that one Sunday night in 1956 her dad called Ed Sullivan in New York and asked him to put Presley on his “reeeelly big shoe.”

They turned on the television and — SURPRISE– there was Elvis on the “Ed Sullivan Show.”

“The last time we saw Elvis was 1974,” Mattinson said, over a late lunch at Paulette’s Restaurant on Madison, voted Memphis’ Most Romantic Restaurant by readers of The Commercial Appeal.

She would see him again in a few seconds. Then she shrieks, pops out of her chair and runs from the room. Elvis is full of surprises.

“If I look at him I’m gone. I’m just gone. I’m outta here,” she says, excitedly peeking around the corner as Elvis sings for another diner at her table. “His looks still don’t disappoint.”
