plants and ground cover

By Cindy Wolff
February 21st, 2008

Please tell me what plants and ground cover are durable in a multi-dog household I'm about to do some landscaping and add a path. I was going to put thyme between the stones, but my friend said her dogs trampling killed it all. What have you found to be hardy, to withstand foot prints and dog's urinating?

Someone suggested hollyberry because they won't go near the sticker leaves. What else?

    Cindy,
I have searched for a pet tolerant ground cover, and the only one that seems to be durable enough for constant, multiple dog trampling is dwarf mondo grass. It's not the most adorable possibility, but everything I've read and all the nursery people I've asked say it's the one. I don't have it in yet, but I am hopeful. It grows two to three inches high, so it may be taller than you want between stepping stones.

I have a question for you or your readers--is there a home air cleaner that really gets out doggy odors, allergens and (please)some of the fur and flying dirt without collapsing? I've read about one called the Pet Machine, but it's $500, and I'd like some testimonials on it or any other candidate before I break the bank.
