New puppy pictures!
By Cindy WolffJune 6th, 2008
I'm sorry it took me a while to get these puppy pictures in. Hanna is the black and white one, Montana is the brown one and the devil is Cyrus who is brown and black and white. I will paste the last few comments in from my friend Joan who is fostering these sweeties for the Memphis Shelby County Humane Society.
From Joan: I need help. Cyrus has decided to bark. A lot. Playing, fighting, relaxing, he barks. I'm sure he is just 'talking'. He's always been pretty vocal. But he needs to tone it down, for his future family's sake and therefore, for his own. Anyone have any good tips to slow the barking down? I've tried ignoring and that's not been helpful.
More from Joan: I am having some discipline problems with Cyrus, primarily with him not being submissive towards me. If he wants something, he goes into the 'wild flailing mode'. I've been turning him onto his back, and he responds somewhat. It's too early to know if he's going to abide by the rules. I think he will. He's still very sweet. He's my Velcro baby. He really wants to stay right by me more than the others. Montana apparently just does not like to be held and cuddled. Try as I might, she is stand-offish. She's playful and friendly, though, so maybe she'll come around. Hannah is my little baby. She tolerates me kissing and cuddling, but the older she gets, the more things she needs to be doing other than letting mama hold her. They all LEAP into the kennel when I get the treats out, and generally speaking, they settle down quickly once in the kennel. Potty training is coming along well. Hannah is still prone to sneaking a pee on the floor on the way out to the backyard, though. But there haven't been any poops in the house for more than a week.
Overall, they're wonderful and a joy.

Oh, wow! They are growing so fast. And so cute!!!
I have no advice about dogs, I'm certified cat staff (dogs have owners, cats have staff).
I'll tell you though, if I DID want a dog, I'd pick Cyrus in a heartbeat. I think I could easily fall in love with him, antics and all... He just has that look in his eyes that I love- smart, mischievous, and challenging...

Lynne, you hit the nail on the head. He is VERY lovable (they all are). He needs someone who can run his little puppy butt around and wear it out. He's smart as a whip. He 'sat' on command twice last night. Coincidence? I don't think so. He was the first one to explore things at my house. He always takes the lead. He's a good boy. Just needs some intense exercise and to be near his person. Today at lunch, all the puppies were very calm, so I guess the intensity level will come and go as they grow.

Call me "dark and twisty" if you will, but I love animals who have such "bigger than life" personalities, if you will...
My cats are all such strong personalities. It's one of the things I love most about them. They all have definite ideas about what they want- which means they usually get it. Hey, it's easier to change myself than it is to train a cat, right?
However, I do know in the case of dogs it's necessary to be more diligent and assertive. I commend you for what you are doing. And meanwhile? I'm loving the stories.

Yep, cats are funny. Whenever I have trouble directing a group of people in doing a group thing, I call it 'herding cats.'

Hannah is definitely a water baby. Yesterday, I watched out the back door as she played in the kiddie pool. She sort of swooshed around the pool on her belly (like a seal), then she'd use her nose to shovel water. Then she'd jump out of the pool and run around the yard with pure abandon. It was just about the cutest thing ever. Then, when I had the water hose out, I let them all play in the spray. She was biting at the water stream, then she'd stick her head in it, then she'd shake her head, then she'd bite it, then repeat... Too cute!

That would make an awesome video...

yep. On a more serious note, my own 10 year old dog Winnie had to go to the vet this morning. She's had a terrible stomach since Saturday. Turns out she has pancreatitis. She's had it before and was fine after two days treatment, but she was a pitiful looking puppy dog this morning. Gotta call the vet after 3 today to get more details and hopefully they'll tell me she can come on home this afternoon. So if you don't mind, send up a prayer for my (38 pound chunk) baby girl that her tummy heals fast.

Prayers on their way...

Good, news on Winnie...Dr. Jo said that she does have pancreatitis, but that she's gonna be fine. She can go home tonight, but has to go back in the morning for a recheck and maybe more IV Flagyl. But Doc said she's eating like a little piglet (that's my girl!) and seems much, much better after IV fluids. Whew! She's my biggest baby, and I swear to you that the dog can say 'help me, Mama' with a look in her eyes when she's sick. Man, I get choked up just thinking about how much I love her.

Thanks for update! Glad to hear the good news. I was going to ask.
It's not hard to love animals. They are so truly pure and good.

Well, it's a sad day...the puppies are back at the Humane Society because I'm leaving for vacation in a couple of days. Today is shot day for them, so I decided that with all I have to do, plus getting Winnie recovered, today was the day to take them for shots and turn them over to the HSMSC care again. Cyrus popped right out of the carrier when we got there, but Hannah and Montana had to literally be pulled from the carrier. They were scared, but vet tech Kathy has known them since they were a day old, and she is the proud grandma to the puppies' former surrogate mom, Miley. I'm sure Kathy will love and kiss on them just like I would. It's hard seeing them go. I may get to have them back for a very short time when I return if they have not been neutered, but I'm not sure, so I got in all the loving and snuggles I could last night and this morning.
Meanwhile, Allie and Winnie, my two old lady dogs, are probably on their bed at home, napping, thinking 'oh happy day!,' haha.

Oh no! No more puppy pics? How will we ever know what happens to them???

Any way to hear how the puppies are doing?

Well, when I came back from vacation, I decided to see if the puppies had had their surgeries yet (no surgery meaning they hadn't been put out for adoption yet). They had not, so I decided to bring Hannah home with me, thinking that I might adopt her. She is doing great. She never seemed to have separation anxiety from her brother and sister. My two old lady dogs are not happy, so I'm still not sure about adoption. If they can't do the surgeries this week either, I'll go get Cyrus and Montana for the duration (until they CAN get their surgeries which means they'll be ready for adoption). I'm so torn. Hannah is just the sweetest girl. Very calm. Still loves the water. Is very quiet at night. She even took a nap with me and the big dogs in my bed and didn't make a sound. Of course, Allie tried to sit on my head to get away from Hannah, and Winnie just hid her head under the covers (they're the biggest babies!). As far as I know, Cyrus and Montana are fine. Hannah is getting tall and lanky, so I suspect that Cyrus and Montana are getting big, too. I'll try to get some more photos of Miss Hannah. She's still absolutely beautiful!

Oh, thank you! I'd love to see pics of Hannah (and if you get Montana and Cyrus back even for a little while, I'd love pics of them too). I tell you, if I had the time/lifestyle for a dog, I would take Cyrus in a heartbeat. He's just stolen my heart with that impish little face and those eyes. If I ever saw him in person, I'd cave. I can not resist animals with bigger than life personalities, and you can tell Cyrus has one.

All three puppies are getting their surgeries today (Thursday, 6/3/08). They should be 'ready' for adoption by next week. Even though I love Hannah, I just don't think this is the time to add another dog to my family. For anyone interested in her, just know that she is the sweetest, most gentle pup. She's very calm for a puppy of this age. She is a little nosy, but is easily redirected when she starts chewing something she's not supposed to. She cries a little when she first gets put in the kennel at night. But within a few minutes, she settles in and goes to sleep for the night. She is very nearly housebroken. She only was peeing and pooping in her kennel (rather than the open house). And then, it was not every night. Most nights were clean and dry. She would do well in any home, but it would be ideal if she could find a home that likes to take walks and would be willing to encourage her love of water. She got along just fine with my two dogs, even though Winnie was being rude to her most of the time. Hannah began to follow Winnie, so I think there was some sort of bonding going on there. Winnie just didn't want to admit it. Hannah is motivated by treats, so training should be pretty easy. She seems to like being held. I would sit with her in my lap and she seemed to like being scratched on her back and belly. She does not like being turned on her back, so no holding like a baby with her. She's such a sweet, sweet girl. If you're looking for a great dog, you need to meet Hannah. You'll be lucky to have her.

After much deliberaton, I decided to adopt Hannah. I brought her home after her surgery Thursday, and I was just watching her and thinking to myself what a good girl she is. I kept asking myself why I wasn't adopting her. My reasons started to fall apart when I admitted to myself that I truly love this dog AND that she fit in my family just fine. In fact, she may be the most well behaved puppy I've known (my two included). I realize that she may decide to crank up the puppy stuff, but I love this baby. From her water antics to the faint freckles on her little white toes, I love her, and I'll just learn to live again with all things shredded. I went out to the Humane Society on Saturday to make the adoption official. I got to see Montana. She has grown, and she was giving everyone kisses. Maybe she's decided that being loved on is OK afterall. I think they said she had an adoption pending, and a couple was putting a second application in on her in case that one fell through. Cyrus was up front and ready for adoption, too. Somebody is gonna love that little boy. He's sweet and active and wants to be somebody's snuggle boy. He'll get a family soon. So, thanks everyone for your interest in the puppies. They've been a joy and a blessing to me. I encourage you all to consider becoming foster families to these babies. They're precious!

FYI, Hannah is now being called Daisy. I've always thought of her as a little sweet flower, so Daisy she is (Also, we have a couple of human 'Hannahs' in the family. That would be a little awkward).

Congrats on Daisy (formerly known as Hannah).
I hope Montana and Cyrus have a good life, too. I'd love to know what happens to them.
That Cyrus is a pistol.
