Fur flying

By Cindy Wolff
August 19th, 2008

Several of my friends shaved their dogs this summer. I always heard that you shouldn't shave dogs that shed. One of my friends shaved their golden retriever. Is that all right Does it bother their fur or skin for it to be shaved like that?

I also want to see what people use to groom their short and long-haired dogs and cats. Have any of you tried the Furminator? Do you like it? I always found success with a rake that has undercoat teeth but I know some people who swear by the Furminator. I'm giving it a whirl because I'm told it also helps short-haired dogs. What do yo think?

I have the furminator. It works great on my long haired cat and he loves it when I use it on him. We're talking huge piles of excess hair.

I've tried it on my beagles (short hair) but it doesn't work on them. They still shed a lot of hair, but the furminator won't grab the hair the same way it does for the longer hair.

I have the most sheddingest dog on the planet (yes, that word was made up especially for him) and nothing works on him. BUT the furminator does get tons of hair off of him that would otherwise be in my house and for that I'm thankful. don't get me wrong, he still sheds, but I think he may shed slightly less when I attack him with it. I've never tried shaving him, I was once told that that was a disaster waiting to happen. Plus he'd look funny and he's very vain.

My sister bought one to use on her short-haired dog and said it combs off an amazing amount of hair.

The Furminator is great!! My dog sheds like crazy and this tool helps to get all the hair from the undercoat. Look on Ebay for it.......much cheaper than retail.

In my opinion, this is nothing more than a flea comb with a long handle. I use the flea comb and the furminator with the same results.
